The Kindu Beauty Salon

The Kindu Trust opened the Beauty Salon in November 2011 to provide employment for family members who were already trained to a professional standard but unable to find employment. We worked with nine women – family members of sponsored children – to set up their own beauty salon in Gondar town. The goal was to set up a self-sufficient business that would utilise their training and provide financial independence for these women and their families.

The salon now employs nine hairdressers and a manager and all employees receive consistent and competitive salaries.

In May 2013, in recognition of The Kindu Trust’s work in Gondar, local government officials donated a shop in a prime location in the centre of Gondar town, making the Beauty Salon completely independent of The Kindu Trust – thus achieving our goal of a self-sufficient business for the women to run.

This business was set up using start up capital of 50,000 birr (£1,780); and would not have been possible without the commitment of the women and donations from our supporters.
